Two years ago, Carson Soucy entered the season firmly as a top-four defenceman for the Vancouver Canucks.

On Wednesday, the 32-year-old blueliner was tossed on waivers by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The other 31 NHL teams have 24 hours to make a claim on the 6-foot-5 defenceman, who will otherwise be sent to the AHL. Soucy hasn’t spent time in the AHL since he was still a rookie in 2019.

The Canucks signed Soucy as a free agent in 2023, in what appeared to be a stroke of genius by former GM Patrik Allvin. The big blueliner helped Vancouver win the Pacific Division in 2023-24, and in the playoffs he was used in a shutdown role, going head-to-head with the likes of Connor McDavid.

Soucy struggled mightily the following season, and the Canucks ditched him quickly, dealing him to the New York Rangers for a third-round pick. The Viking, Alta. native was traded to the New York Islanders in January, before signing a one-year, $1.15-million contract with Columbus on Sept. 29.

Soucy has appeared in just seven games with the Blue Jackets this season, averaging 14:45 per game. He has no goals and one assist, with a plus/minus of -5.
