Mission Police say a five-year-old girl was sent to hospital after allegedly overdosing on fentanyl last week.

According to a statement, first responders were called to a residence on Nottman Street in Mission around 9 p.m. on March 20 after receiving a call about a child who was unconscious and receiving CPR.

Police say the child was taking a bath when she “reportedly handled a jar” that contained the highly potent opioid.

Soon after, she began displaying signs of medical distress, and adults called 911 when her breathing changed and she started to vomit.

Her condition was quickly deteriorating, and paramedics administered “multiple doses” of Naloxone, which improved her medical state.

She was sent to hospital and is expected to recover.

Mission Police said the incident provides a stark reminder of how dangerous fentanyl is to any individual, but specifically children.

“Anyone who keeps fentanyl in their residence should ensure it is always stored in a secure place, out of reach of anyone who is not intending on using it,” stated authorities.

Police say the incident remains under investigation.
