Several blocks of downtown Vancouver will be closed this morning as first responders gather to remember a firefighter who died earlier this month.

On social media, the Vancouver Fire Fighters’ Union Local 18 identified the firefighter as Ron Renville.

First responders from across the province shared their condolences for Renville who passed away suddenly in his home on May 4.

He worked as an Acting Lieutenant with Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services for 18 years. He leaves behind his wife Kristin, son Ethan (age 14), and daughter Zoe (age 12).

“Acting Lieutenant Renville was an exceptional member of our Local and Department. Ron was known for his skill as a firefighter, his positivity around the hall and his commitment to helping other members in need,” said the Vancouver Fire Fighters’ Union Local 18.

A service for Renville is being held at the First Baptist Church on Burrard Street this morning and is also being live-streamed for the public.

Nelson Street from Thurlow Street to Burrard Street and Burrard Street from Nelson Street to Smithe Street will be shut down between 11:30 am to 12 pm for the funeral procession.
