First Look: Woodward’s Vancouver

Vancity Buzz stated that Woodward’s development will be the catalyst for change that is needed in the Downtown Eastside (DTES). Whether or not this development will bring about the change promised remains to be seen. You have to remember that change does not happen overnight, it will take at least a decade once Woodward’s is fully occupied to any real indications of change, if any in the DTES.

Irrespective of how you view the development from a socioeconomic standpoint, you have to admit the finished product is an architectural gem in a city full of bland Concord Pacific condos. This without a doubt was my favourite project of the last building boom and I think many would agree with me on that assertion. My favourite part of the project would have to be the huge photographic mural, which recreates the Gastown riot of 1971 by Stan Douglas. It is a great addition to the project and ties in well with the community’s history.
