“This collision was immediately and obviously serious, and that caused a complete shutdown of the highway,” said Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol in a release.
“Our first priority is to help the injured, then we need to start the investigation and inform the families of the dead and injured about what happened. We encourage people to consider those families before they post photos of bodies to the internet.”
DriveBC has posted that Highway 1 is closed westbound at 176th Street, in addition to the westbound on/off ramps.
“No access from 200 St to 176th. Expect delays due to congestion in the surrounding area. Assessment in progress. Consider an alternate route,” stated the traveller information system for the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Transit.

BC Highway Patrol added that they will not be releasing any further details about those involved in the Highway One crash at this time in order to ensure that families have time to process the information and grieve.
“We’d like to remind everyone to be extra-cautious and consider slowing down to under the speed limit during dark, dangerous winter driving conditions,” added Corporal McLaughlin. “Serious and fatal collisions are the last thing we want to see at Christmas.”
Anyone who witnessed the collision or has any dash cam footage of the driving behaviour in the moments leading up to the collision is asked to contact BC Highway Patrol – Burnaby at 604-526-9744 and quote file (1003) 2025-4185.
