The family of 88-year-old Jarnail Sanghera shared a heartfelt tribute on social media thanking individuals who helped search for the senior, whose body was found in Delta on Sunday.

On Instagram, the Sanghera family wrote they were “heartbroken” over the loss of their beloved “Papa Ji” — a term of endearment and respect used for a father or grandfather in Punjabi.

“Papa Ji was a loving dad, grandfather and great-grandfather,” reads the post.

“He has left behind a heartbroken family who adores him and will carry on his legacy. He absolutely loved nature and all animals. He’s probably smiling down on us, witnessing our community come together in an attempt to find him.”

Sanghera went missing from his family home in North Delta on May 15. The senior had dementia, and his family quickly mobilized a search group using social media. Hundreds of volunteers gathered to assist authorities in locating the senior.

The search sadly came to an end on Sunday, when Delta Police confirmed Sanghera’s body was found in a remote corner of a business property in Delta.

In a statement, spokesperson for Delta Police Cris Leykauf said that foul play is not suspected at this time.

“The search for Mr. Sanghera was the top priority for the Delta Police these past 10 days, with significant resources redirected to the effort to find him,” said Leykauf, adding that Search and Rescue was called out three times, with 78 searchers deployed over an extensive area to locate the senior.

Leykauf commended Surrey RCMP, the City of Surrey, Metro Vancouver Transit Police’s Physical Security Department, and members of the public for their support with the file.

“And we want to recognize the Commercial Vehicle Inspector who even came in on his anniversary to pull video,” she said. “So many individuals, businesses and community groups contributed to the effort to find Mr. Sanghera.”

Sanghera’s family also shared their gratitude, recognizing the efforts of police, Search and Rescue, and members of the public who assisted with the search.

“Thank you to all the individuals who helped us in our efforts to find our Papa Ji,” wrote Sanghera’s family.

“We felt your love and support throughout this past week. We saw the community come together in a heart-warming way.”

The family added that they will be “forever thankful” for the community support they received.
