8 unexpected ways to spend the weekend in False Creek

Aug 31 2019, 12:29 am

If you’ve grown tired of doing the same old thing every weekend — whether that’s watching movies or going for brunch — don’t worry. There are plenty of unexpected ways to spend a day in Vancouver, and more specifically, the beautiful False Creek area.

After working Monday to Friday, it’s only normal to want to fill your weekend with as many activities as possible.

That’s why we’ve compiled a list of unexpected ways you can spend a Saturday or Sunday in False Creek. It’ll definitely make it easier to answer the classic Monday morning work question: “What did you get up to on the weekend?” (You’ll no longer have to say you spent the entire weekend binging Netflix on the couch, that’s for sure.)

Rent a BBQ boat

Take outdoor barbecuing to a whole new level with a BBQ boat — yes, they exist. If you’re new to the world of BBQ boats, it’s a truly unique experience. When the sun is out, head out on the water and enjoy true waterfront dining while seeing Vancouver as you’ve never seen it before!

You don’t need a boating license to rent one of these boats, and everything is included except for food and drinks. This is one of the best ways to spend your weekend, we’d say.

Go on a self-guided public art tour

Did you know that the False Creek area is home to some beautiful public art by emerging and established local artists? In fact, if you’re up for a day of walking, you can head on a self-guided public art tour starting at the Yaletown-Roundhouse Canada Line Station and continuing on a scenic route along Pacific Boulevard and the False Creek Seawall. Take your time and stop at whichever installations catch your eye!

Try your luck at the casino

If you’re feeling lucky (and of course, if you’re over the age of 19), head on over to Parq Casino — think of it as the adult version of a playground.

Take in some live entertainment at Lotus Whiskey/Tea Lounge, then head over to the tables to check out Parq Casino’s state of the art gaming. You can even try your luck in one of their many tournaments. Whether your game is blackjack, baccarat, or even slots, they’ve got you covered. Just don’t forget to use your GameSense and gamble responsibly. (The more you know about the game, the better you’ll play and the more fun you’ll have!)

On the Sunday during Labour Day weekend, take advantage of Parq Casino’s Scratch for Treasure promotion. From 9 am until midnight, you can scratch for a chance to win free play, food offers, hotel stays, gift cards, and more. You won’t want to miss out on this deal, which is first come, first serve. Visit ParqVancouver’s official website for more information and tournament schedules.

Go stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking

False Creek is a super popular area for stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking year-round, but when the weather is looking good, you’ll find everyone flocking to the water — and with good reason. Not only is it extremely enjoyable, but it’s a great workout, too!

You can rent paddleboards or kayaks from Granville Island, and beginners can leisurely cruise through False Creek. More advanced paddlers may want to head out towards English Bay to explore the coastline, or even paddle towards Stanley Park (just be sure to watch out for boats.)

Book a whale watching tour

Did you know that Vancouver is one of the world’s best locations for whale watching? From March to October each year, thousands of whales migrate through the waters near the city. A number of tour operators offer whale watching expeditions from False Creek, so you can spot pods of whales from the comfort of the boat. BC’s coastlines are teeming with sea lions, otters, dolphins, and sea birds, so you’ll probably spot a wide range of creatures, not just whales. Get your cameras ready!

Hit up a new happy hour

If you’re looking for a low key way to spend your weekend, Parq Vancouver’s Centre Bar is the place to go. Why? Because happy hour here lasts a total of SIX hours from 2:30 pm to 8:30 pm daily. That means you can still enjoy deals while avoiding the huge crowds that flock to False Creek during peak times. While you’re there, you can even try the bar’s new casual dining menu — a recent addition to the bar’s entourage of delicious eats. Spend your afternoon (or evening) indulging in good food, good drinks, and good company.

See a live stand-up comedy show

Live comedy might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you’re considering how to spend a Saturday; however, don’t knock it till you try it! Vancouver TheatreSports League is an internationally renowned improv comedy group located at The Improv Centre on Granville Island, and they produce a variety of great comedy shows. Most of their shows are relatively inexpensive on the weekend, too (they’ll only set you back around $20), so it’s a nice way to treat yourself without breaking the bank.

Explore Hinge Park

If taking a bit of time away from bustling city life is your idea of spending a perfect weekend day, then head over to Hinge Park, a small hidden oasis amongst the condos in False Creek. Hinge Park is a popular spot for dog owners to take their furry friends, but it’s also great to explore when you want to have some peace and quiet.

If you explore the shoreline, chances are you’ll see a variety of sea creatures, including starfish, crabs, and shellfish! The park also includes some quirky features like a bridge made from an old sewer pipe.

Prepare yourself for a fun-filled day in False Creek — get out of the house and spend the day outside! After all, relaxing can wait till Sunday night.
