Inside Metro Vancouver's giant new pickleball facility — and how to start playing

Pickleball players have a new place to get their game on with the arrival of Fairgrounds to Metro Vancouver.
The Canadian-based public racket club opens the doors on Friday, Dec. 12, to its first West Coast location, a massive new pickleball facility at Capilano Mall in North Vancouver.
Pickleballers of all skill levels will feel at home in the 60,000 sq. ft. facility that used to house a Sears and then the North Shore Bike Park.
With tall ceilings, colourful courts, a gym and stretching area, and more, there’s lots to discover before you take your first swing.

“We designed this space to be inspiring and fun, from the colours to the music,” said Carr Norton, head of Programming, Community Building, and Head Pro for Fairgrounds.
“At Fairgrounds, we do our very best to make everything, from the atmosphere and the programs, as inclusive as possible. You never know, you just might be the next to catch the pickleball bug.”

The flagship club features 15 indoor pickleball and racket sport courts in the giant facility.
There are lockers and change rooms for guests to use, and a pro shop where you can shop a curated lineup of paddles, apparel, and lifestyle gear.
Fairgrounds, which is free to join, also plans on opening a café offering food and drinks in the future.

“Pickleball is the world’s most accessible and social sport,” explained Carr. “Whether you’re a seasoned tennis player or a first-time athlete, you can pick up the paddle and rally.
“The court is really small and intimate, so everybody can play. And you’re going to make friends, socialize, and get good exercise, all on your first day on the courts.
Pickleballers are invited to try out the new courts for free during opening weekend from Dec. 12 to 14.
There will also be activations and giveaways from local businesses like Lee’s Donuts, Greenhouse, Formula Fig, Myo, Barbet, and more

Fairgrounds is also offering free programming like open-play lessons, coach-led clinics and socials from Dec. 12 to 21. And the Capilano location is offering kids free play throughout the month.
Visitors can also sign up for league play, coaching and clinics, member mixers, and pickleball parties.
