Canadian Facebook users can now easily transfer photos and videos

Facebook’s photo transfer tool is now available in Canada.

The tool was first introduced in 2019, when the social media company said that “if you share data with one service, you should be able to move it to another.”

“That’s the principle of data portability, which gives people control and choice while also encouraging innovation,” said Steve Satterfield, director of privacy and public policy at the time, adding that Facebook users were now able to transfer their photos and videos directly to other services, starting with Google Photos.

Almost five months after the tool was first introduced, it is now available to Canadian and American Facebook users.

According to Facebook, the new tool stems from their work on the Data Transfer Project, “an open-source, collaborative initiative to create data portability tools that allow people to easily move their data between online service.”

This tool is built directly into the Facebook app.

So how do you transfer your photos and videos?

1. Go to ‘Your Facebook Information’ in your Facebook Settings
While you’re here, Facebook says you can also check your privacy settings, review your activity log, and use Facebook’s Access Your Information and Download Your information tools.

2. Select ‘Transfer a Copy of Your Photos or Videos’
Click ‘View’ to begin transferring your photos and videos.

3. Enter your Facebook password
To verify your identity, we ask that you enter your password before initiating a transfer.

4. Choose a destination
Choose Google Photos from the dropdown. Facebook plans to integrate with new partners soon, they said.

5. Select ‘Confirm Transfer’
After entering your Google Photos password, you’re all set. You’ll see a notification on Facebook and via email once the transfer is complete.
