Eyes on the Cup: Downie to Colorado

Dec 19 2017, 1:26 pm

Trade deadling is coming up fast and the grit forwards the Canucks need so desperately are becoming fewer by the day. Case in point: TSN is now reporting that Steve Downie has just been traded from Tampa Bay to the Colorado Avalanche. It is a three-way deal with Detroit, who received Kyle Quincey in exchange for Tampa getting their 2012 first round draft pick.

Downie is currently on his second year of a 2-year $3.7 million contract. He will be a restricted free agent at the end of this season.

He is exactly the kind of guy the Canucks are shopping for. His production has gone down since last season, along with all of the other players in Tampa aside from Stamkos, so he is a perfect buy-low candidate. He also fights hard, and hits even harder. He brings a mean and tough style of play to the game, something the Canucks have been heavily criticized for lacking.

Downie destroys Dean McAmmond:

Mike Gillis won’t be going into the playoffs without someone similar to Downie, but the longer he takes to make a move, the slimmer his options will become. Detroit is solidifying their line-up in preparation for their cup run; It is time for the Canucks to do the same.
