Olympic biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid is feeling some heat after a very bizarre interview at Milano Cortina 2026 on Tuesday.
Shortly after he was able to win a bronze medal in the men’s 20km biathlon, the 28-year-old broke down in an interview and admitted to cheating on his now ex-girlfriend.
“Six months ago, I met the love of my life, the most beautiful and kindest person in the world. Three months ago, I made the biggest mistake and cheated on her,” Holm Lægreid shockingly revealed.

Holm Lægreid also mentioned that he had informed his ex-girlfriend about the situation roughly one week ago. While she was certainly upset by the revelation, she isn’t too pleased with him making their private business public, either.
During an interview with Norwegian outlet VG, Holm Lægreid’s ex, who chose to remain anonymous, made her thoughts on the matter crystal clear.
“I did not choose to be put in this position, and it hurts to have to be in it. We have had contact, and he is aware of my opinions on this,” she said (translated from Norwegian to English with Google Translate). “[I am grateful] to my family and friends who have embraced me and supported me during this time. Also to everyone else who has thought of me and sympathized, without knowing who I am.”
Holm Lægreid’s comments were met with a fair share of criticism. Not only was it seen as a strange thing to make public, but it also took away the spotlight from his teammate, Johan-Olav Botn, who won gold in the same event. Botn had dedicated his gold medal to their late teammate Sivert Guttorm Bakken, who passed away in December.
Perhaps with a clearer head, Holm Lægreid apologized to both his ex and Botn on Wednesday.
“I deeply regret bringing up this personal story on what was a day of celebration for Norwegian biathlon,” Holm Lægreid said in an interview with Norway’s state broadcaster, NRK (translated by BBC).
“I am not quite myself these days, and I am not thinking clearly. My apologies go to Johan-Olav, who deserved all the attention after winning gold. My apologies also go to my ex-girlfriend, who unwillingly ended up in the media spotlight. I hope she is doing well.”
Only time will tell, but it appears as though Holm Lægreid’s viral apology may not work out the way he had hoped.
