Residents who had to leave their homes because of a wildfire burning near Squamish were allowed to return Sunday.
The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District rescinded an evacuation order for properties on Rustand Road S, Squamish Valley Road north of Rustad Road, and within the vicinity of Levette Lake, Evans Lake, Butterfly Lake, and Lewis Lake.
The district was “advised by the BC Wildfire Service incident commander that the danger from the Magee Road fire has decreased that it is currently safe to re-occupy,” it said in a news bulletin.
UPDATE: The Magee Rd fire is now classified as Being Held. Sufficient suppression has been taken that the fire is not likely to spread beyond current boundaries under prevailing & forecast conditions w resources currently assigned. #BCWildfire

The fire is still burning though, and at the same time as the district lifted the evacuation order, it issued an evacuation alert. An alert is a step down from an order and means residents should have their emergency bags packed and be ready to leave on short notice.
Properties currently under evacuation alert include those on Squamish Valley Road north of the Pilchuck Bridge, and side streets in the area.
