Elliotte Friedman has topped his ridiculous screen time mark from last year's NHL trade deadline

If you think you spend a lot of time on your phone, you’re probably not as bad as NHL insider Elliotte Friedman.

Over his time working in the industry, the Sportsnet reporter has earned a reputation as one of the NHL’s top insiders for breaking much of the league’s biggest news.

But while he’s earned popularity, recognition, and probably a decent paycheque for his efforts, there’s one thing Friedman is definitely lacking: sleep.

Last year, Friedman was on with the NHL on TNT panel when he admitted he was up to 17 hours of screen time per day around the league’s trade deadline.

But to quote The Wolf of Wall Street character Mark Hanna (as portrayed by Matthew McConaughey), it turns out those were rookie numbers.

“Yesterday, I’m embarrassed to say I hit 20 [hours of screen time]… I was up late,” Friedman said on a hit on Wednesday night with the TNT panel once again.

“It was bad… My brain is mush, it’s absolute mush.”

While Friedman also shared details of Jack Hughes’ injury (out for the season) and Mikko Rantanen’s status (potentially on the move again after being traded to Carolina mid-season), the remark about his screen time seemed to generate the most buzz from the hit.

Friedman has been a staple of Sportsnet’s hockey coverage since Rogers acquired NHL national broadcast rights in 2014, previously having worked for CBC and The Score television networks.

At age 54, he’s probably got more than a few trade deadlines left to see if he can reach the immaculate achievement of 24 hours of screen time in a day.

In any case, the NHL trade deadline is set for noon PST/3 p.m. EST on Friday. We can only hope Friedman can get some rest when it’s all said and done, though with 24 games going on in the three days following the trade deadline, that might have to wait until next week.
