An elderly woman has been rushed to the hospital after being struck by a vehicle on Tuesday afternoon.

According to a statement from the RCMP, the 71-year-old victim was hit while walking across the street at the intersection of Nelson Street and Ridgeway Avenue in Coquitlam. The initial investigation from police “shows that the pickup truck was making a left turn when the 71-year-old pedestrian was knocked down.”

The woman was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries, although it’s hoped that she’ll recover.

The driver of the pickup truck, an 84-year-old Coquitlam man, is fully cooperating with police. At this stage of the investigation, police say that there is no evidence that speed or impairment were factors in the collision.

“We often don’t think twice about left turns because they are so routine, but left turns are one of the most high-risk manoeuvers on the road,” says Corporal Michael McLaughlin. “If safety is the goal, all road users need to be extra-aware and take extra care when someone is turning left.”

Anyone who saw the moments prior to the collision, or the collision itself is asked to contact the Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550.
