May 29 2018, 12:05 am

Road closures on one of the major routes leading into downtown Vancouver kick off today, as FortisBC begins work on a natural gas line along East 1st Avenue.

Drivers should take note of the following closures on East 1st Avenue, which start today:

  • Lane closures from Nanaimo Street to Rupert Street, May 28 to end of July 2018
  • Lane closures from Highway 1 overpass to Boundary Road, May 28 to mid-June 2018

FortisBC is planning more road closures on East 1st in June and August.

It is all part of a 20-km-long construction project running through three municipalities to replace a 20-inch diameter gas line with a new 30-inch line.

Further construction will also be happening in Burnaby from Boundary Road along Graveley Street to Douglas Road and down to Lougheed Highway. It will continue along Lougheed Highway to Bainbridge Avenue, then continue on Broadway to Gagliardi Way and North Road.

And in Coquitlam, the line will run along Como Lake Avenue from North Road to the FortisBC facility at Spuraway Avenue near Mariner Way.

Construction on the entire stretch will be fully complete by late 2019. For more updates, visit the FortisBC website.
