A high-flying plan that involved drugs, a drone, and an Abbotsford correctional facility was ultimately grounded recently, thanks to the “vigilance of staff,” according to Correctional Service Canada (CSC).

And even though the CSC “uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions,” the agency said it now plans on “heightening measures to prevent contraband from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone.”

In a release issued on Friday, the CSC said the incident in question took place around 10 pm on December 23, when a package containing $26,500 worth of drugs and tobacco was dropped from a drone above the the Matsqui Institution, a medium security federal institution in Abbotsford.

The package was intercepted and seized by officials at the facility.

In the release, the CSC also noted that a complete smoking ban was in all federal correctional institutions was implemented in 2008.

“CSC works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions,” the agency said.
