How one downtown Vancouver hotel has opened its doors to frontline workers

A downtown Vancouver hotel located across the street from St. Paul’s Hospital is providing a place of much-needed rest for frontline healthcare workers during the pandemic.

The Burrard Hotel teamed up with the hospital’s operator, Providence Health Care, in March to provide a space for staff to take their breaks or stay overnight.

Hotel manager Darren Simpson says it’s a small way the boutique hotel and its staff can show their appreciation for doctors, nurses, RTs, and other healthcare staff, who work right across the street.

“The Burrard is proud of the work that St. Paul’s does in our community, and this is just another way that we are able to support them,” Simpson told Daily Hive.

Staff have the option to stay at the hotel or use a “relax room” for a few hours for breaks during their shifts. The rooms are also open for staff to shower and change after their shifts.

Simpson explains the relax rooms are being paid at a nominal fee by Providence Health Care and some overnight rooms are offered at a discounted fee or are covered by the hospital operator.

The Burrard has also recently partnered with restaurant operator Toptable Group to supply all Providence Healthcare rooms with delicious meals from some of Vancouver’s best fine-dining establishments including Elisa Steak and Blue Water Cafe. The meals change daily and are provided at check-in.

Since March 23, The Burrard has provided over 175 relax rooms and over 40 overnight stays to frontline hospital staff.

“Right now, everyone feels a little helpless, but as a manager, I’ve seen the way that this initiative has helped our team feel more of a sense of purpose,” said Simpson. “They’re proud of the work that they’re doing, and that makes me proud.”
