'Magical moment': Dolphins delight Vancouver beachgoers over the weekend

Vancouver was treated to fantastic weather this weekend, and some lucky beachgoers even spotted dozens of dolphins enjoying themselves in the water.

Daily Hive Vancouver reader Imaan Jiwa said she spotted a pod of over 30 dolphins swimming near West Vancouver just before sunset on Friday evening.

“It was truly a magical moment,” she said.

Jiwa noted that the white underbelly of the whales signifies that they could be Pacific white-sided dolphins.

“As their name suggests, Pacific white-sided dolphins have a white or light-grey stripe that runs along each side of their body from in front of their eye to the mid-body,” states Oceana Canada’s information page.

“This stripe blends in almost artistically with the dark grey colour of the rest of their body, while a stark, black stripe clearly divides this light-grey stripe from their bright white underside.”

However, these dolphins are often confused with Dall’s porpoises due to their similar patterning and colours.

Jiwa wasn’t the only one to spot the pod. A Reddit user posted footage of dolphins on the Vancouver subreddit.

“Stoked to see some dolphins at Third Beach today,” they wrote on Friday.

Folks in the comments said they also spotted the dolphins over the weekend.

“My girlfriend and I got to see it too!… Such a cool sight to see! So happy we made the time to go down there today,” wrote one Redditor.

“Saw them over in [West Vancouver] on the sea wall this afternoon as well. So cool!” said another.
