Distracted Vancouver drivers get exposed by bicycle officers

Distracted driving is a significant issue in Vancouver and other major cities, and a couple of drivers were recently publicly exposed.

The VPD Traffic Section shared a post on X which highlighted a couple of drivers who were caught red-handed by bicycle officers.

One of the pictures showed a man with neither hand on the wheel.

The VPD Traffic Section called one of the photos of the Vancouver drivers “next level,” due to the nature of the distracted driving offence. It shows a man holding a Body Energy Club smoothie in one hand and his phone in the other, with no hands on the steering wheel.

According to the VPD Traffic Section, the woman pictured in the second photo disposed of her phone in her cup holder when she realized the bicycle officer was nearby.

Someone pointed out that the social media post was ironic, as it highlighted that the Body Energy Club driver was nabbed right outside the Vancouver Police Museum, with the reflection of the museum visible in the passenger-side window.

Another person responded, “No wonder there are so many accidents.” Another X user who reacted to the post suggested that the fines for distracted driving should be raised.

ICBC recommends that drivers refrain from using their phones when stopped at a red light or in bumper-to-bumper traffic. It also says that if you have an ‘L’ or an ‘N’ licence, you aren’t allowed to use your electronic devices for any purpose, even if they’re in hands-free mode.

Tickets for distracted driving carry a fine of $368.

“Anything that takes your attention away from driving can contribute to distracted driving. Even when stopped, checking an electronic device affects your focus. You’re 3.6 times more likely to crash if you’re using your hand-held phone,” ICBC says.

Along with the $368 fine, a distracted driving ticket also includes four penalty points.

ICBC doesn’t offer any guidance on what to do if you have a Body Energy Club smoothie bowl, but it’s probably not a great idea to be driving while consuming one.
