And our last stop on the Glowbal Group’s Dine Out Preview is Coast. We were already a bit full from the Italian Kitchen and Black + Blue tasting, but we did save some room for this final tasting.
For the appetizer, we were served a sampling size of their Spanish Mussels & Frites. Done in a tomato-based broth, the plump mussels are combined with chorizo crumbles as well as some feta cheese. Both were good contrasts to the sweet mussels. And just off to the side, you’ll spot the frites.
Another option is the Dungeness Crab & Sun Choke Chowder. It has a Japanese twist, complete with miso and sake in the broth. There are also mussels, clams and bit of crab tomalley which served to give it a seafood flavour, although it seemed to be masked by the miso.
For entrees, they have a dish that gives a good representation of Coast’s regular cuisine, the Sushi Tile. There’s a bit of soba salad, with some salmon escabeche (fried salmon). You also get a few pieces of the their albacore tataki roll. The is a great choice if you are going for something light.
For the meatlovers, there is an Alberta Beef “Oscar Style.” It’s a decent portion of meat and potatoes. The shrimp on top is probably there to remind you that you are in a seafood restaurant, that’s how well-prepared the bites I had were.
For our tasting, we sampled the Salmon Two Ways. On the right is the Roasted Salmon. The sauce is a cauliflower puree and there are a few mushrooms tucked in underneath. This dish was fairly good, but the second was definitely better.
On the left is the Olive Crusted version. The sauce is pea and basil puree, but extremely mild in flavour. The croquette completely stole the show, in my opinion. It’s loaded with chunks of prawn bacon, and then deep-fried! What’s not to love?
For dessert, they served up a Taiyaki. I had never had this before, but it’s essentially a fish-shaped and candied puff pastry, normally filled with red bean paste. However, these ones had assorted sugary creams inside; I think mine was lightly filled with chocolate cream. Since this is the last stop of the tasting, the desserts that were part of the Italian Kitchen and Black + Blue also made an appearance.
Dine Out started on January 17 and runs until February 2, 2014. Details for booking are below.
