Devon Toews' status for Canada at the Olympics has been revealed: report

It’s been over a month since Canada named its team for the Olympics.

Despite injuries to a handful of their players, only one, Anthony Cirelli, has been ruled out of the Olympics. Sam Bennett was recently named as his replacement.

However, the status of defenceman Devon Toews has been lingering ever since he was named to the squad.

Back on Dec. 31, when Toews was named to the squad, he made it clear that his availability for the Olympics hinged on one thing.

“If my baby hasn’t arrived, I’m staying here,” he told the media. “That’s 100 per cent what I’ll do. I’m not leaving until that baby is here and everyone is home safe.”

Well, Toews hasn’t explicitly said that his baby has arrived, but one insider did reveal his status for the Olympics.

CHEK’s Rick Dhaliwal reported on Thursday that, according to his sources, Toews will be travelling with some of his Colorado Avalanche teammates to Italy.

The Denver Gazette reported previously that Toews’ fourth child was due on Feb. 2.

Toews did speak to the media on Wednesday before the Avs’ 4-2 win over the San Jose Sharks. While he didn’t explicitly reveal that his fourth child had been born, he sure didn’t sound like a guy who was about to skip out on the Olympics.

Here’s what he said when asked about playing for Team Canada at the Olympics alongside his two Avalanche teammates, Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar.

“It’ll be cool,” he said. “I love spending time with them. They’re great teammates, great friends of mine. Anytime you get to go and enjoy it with your friends and have some familiar faces, it’s really cool.”

Not only that, but he basically confirmed that he’d be in Milan.

“Pretty focused on tonight and worried about that,” he said when asked about going to the Olympics. “Once we get over there, it will get more exciting for sure.”

Toews did miss a month of hockey due to an upper-body injury, so there wasn’t a family-related lineup absence that might have hinted at his Olympic status. The Abbotsford, B.C., native missed 13 games before returning to the lineup on Feb. 2.
