One of Canada’s most recognizable Olympic athletes had his dreams of medaling in 2026 put on pause.
But not all hope is lost.
Mark McMorris was stretchered off the mountain in Livigno on Wednesday night during a training run.
Things seemed grim for the three-time Olympic medalist, as Team Canada released a statement that he was involved in a “heavy crash,” putting his Olympics in doubt.
But for those who know the McMorris story, you probably shouldn’t rule him out.
The Regina, Saskatchewan, native broke his femur in 2016 and then suffered a number of severe injuries after a crash in 2017. Yet he rebounded to win bronze at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games.
McMorris provided an update on social media Thursday morning about his status for the rest of the games.

“I took a fall last night. I hit my head,” he said.
McMorris added that he will miss the big air competition, but McMorris is still hoping to compete in the slopestyle event.
“Fortunately, things are looking up for slopestyle,” he said. “So [I’m] just trying to stay positive and shift my focus to that event.”
The crash occurred on the giant, 50-metre-high hill, which probably looks daunting to anyone who isn’t an Olympian.
The big air ramp in Livigno where Mark McMorris went down. It lives up to its name. The good news is McMorris is back at the Olympic Village and said to beāfeeling good.ā #MilanoCortina2026 pic.twitter.com/j5cYrIHckU

McMorris still has time to heal up for the slopestyle event. Men’s qualification for slopestyle takes place on Feb. 16, and the finals will occur on Feb. 18.
