Tens of thousands of dollars worth of stolen designer goods and a “powdered drug” have been seized during an investigation by the Burnaby RCMP.
The detachment’s Investigative Support Team (IST) were executing a search warrant on a residence last month for an unrelated ongoing investigation when they found the huge stash of stolen sunglasses as well as other eyewear.
Officers also found approximately 5 grams of a powdered drug mixed in with the eyewear, which they believe to be fentanyl.
According to the Government of Canada, fentanyl is 20 to 40 times stronger than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine, which makes the risk of an accidental overdose “very high.”

“Criminals are going to criminal,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj with the Burnaby RCMP.
“When investigating crime, police often discover other crimes being committed by the same individuals.”
Burnaby RCMP seized eight boxes of stolen property, filled with over 100 designer eyewear items, and many still had store tags attached.
The tags allowed authorities to track the items as stolen goods from several Lower Mainland businesses.

Police say that while the actual value of the goods is unknown, one eyewear item was listed at $1,140, and several others were tagged at several hundred dollars each.
Burnaby RCMP added that it is working to return as many of the stolen goods as possible to the rightful businesses and owners.
“What’s also concerning is if they were selling these items on the side, some unsuspecting victim could have unknowingly been contaminated by illicit drugs,” added Cpl. Kalanj.
