Love may be a term to score points in tennis, but it has taken on a double meaning for players Denis Shapovalov and Mirjam Bjorklund.

Shapovalov, one of Canada’s premier tennis stars, proposed to Bjorklund, a 24-year-old who won the Swedish Open back in 2021, at a beach in Bastad, Sweden.

The 24-year-old Canadian and his soon-to-be wife each posted a series of black-and-white photos of the romantic proposal. The picture-perfect moment was captured by international photographer Kate Gabor.

Though the pair didn’t cross paths much during their junior careers, fate brought them together in 2019, and they have been inseparable ever since, recently celebrating their four-year anniversary together at Wimbledon.

In the comments section, messages of excitement and support poured in from fellow tennis stars like Sloane Stephens, Felix Auger Aliassime, and Monica Puig to celebrate their love story.

Social media accounts from major tournaments like the US Open, Davis Cup, and Miami Open also wished the couple the best, along with Tennis Canada, which wrote, “Such a beautiful moment and exciting time! Congratulations to you both.”

Currently ranked 23rd among men’s singles, Shapovalov will return to action next month at the National Bank Open in Toronto, the city he grew up in.

Last June, Bjorklund earned a career-high singles ranking of 123 by the WTA.
