There are a ton of reasons to spend a day at the races.

Regardless of what drew you there — maybe you’re going to enjoy the posh fashion, or perhaps you like to sip on classy cocktails in the afternoon — if you don’t wager at the Deighton Cup, did you even go?

It’s pretty clear that betting is a quintessential part of racing experience, but something you might not know is — while you’re busy cheering on your favourite racehorse, you’re also giving back to your community.

But how does betting on horse racing give back to the community, you may be wondering? We’re so glad you asked.

Play It Forward is BCLC’s campaign to invest in the structure and roots of Vancouver. And every bet made at Deighton Cup, and events like it, benefit the community initiative.

Since 2007, millions of dollars in revenue have been set aside, invested, or donated to support childcare, jobs, and community gaming grants.

For instance, Hastings contributes $500,000 annually to the Hastings Park Improvement Fund, which focuses on improving green space in the local neighbourhood. Over the next 20 years,Ā Hastings Racecourse will invest two million dollars into the city of Vancouver through its Community Legacy Fund.

So now you can sit back, sip a fancy cocktail, and enjoy the races knowing that your hard-earned money is going back to your community — how sweet is that?
