Fontaine’s victory is a major shakeup for New Westminster’s political landscape. Fontaine, a member of the New Westminster Progressives (NWP), was first elected to city council in 2022.
According to his online profile, Fontaine is a “champion of responsible spending, safer and vibrant streets, stronger core services, a focus on local infrastructure and facilities, and a more open city hall.”
Fontaine and his party ran on a platform of “respecting New West taxpayers” and promised to lower annual average property tax increases and launch a Core Service Review within six months of taking office.
“People are paying more, while growing less confident their tax dollars are being managed carefully,” Fontaine stated in a previous release.
“An NWP council will bring property taxes back under control, focus City Hall on core services and make every dollar work harder for residents.”
Fontaine also promises to bolster public safety and tackle homelessness by adding at least a dozen new Community Enforcement and Safety Officers (CESO) to patrol across the city and tripling investment into I’s On The Street program. He’s also been critical of the “tiny homes village” — as a form of modular transitional housing.
Outgoing mayor Johnstone first served two terms on New Westminster City Council before running and winning as mayor in 2022 for Community First New West.
