Where is the place for dance? Emmalena Fredriksson’ Dance work / work dance investigates alternative perspectives on dance, particularly the possibilities of dance in an art gallery.

For three days, the Audin Gallery becomes a house for dance. Not only dancers inhabit the space with their movements, in the gallery are also possible to read a book about dance (books from An Exact Vertigo library) or just to chat about dance.

Ten dancers – Emmalena Fredriksson, Sarah Fdili-Alaoui, Isabelle Kirouac, Alexa Mardon, Erika Misuhashi, Layla Mrozowski, Deanna Peters, Daisy Thompson, Lexi Vajda and Ashley Whitehead – will performer for 18.5 hours, a total of 115 loops of four dance solos that are presenting for five hours per day, from 12 to 5 pm, in the white space of the Audin Gallery.

The four solos are all new works created by improvisational looping scores that contain scores themselves. For each piece, dancers wear a different colour.

Dance work / work dance, the piece collocated in a small space at the entrance of the gallery and accompanied by a sound installation, is grey.

Spectator are invited to stay as long as they want, to read a book, to take of their shoes, to sit around dancers… in a few words, to feel at home, to be at home. The focuses and attention of dancers are incredible, especially considering the proximity between the performers and the performers and spectators.

Dance work / Work dance is a courage and thoughtful work that force spectators and dancers to redefine what dance is and where it is its place. The goal of the work, as Fredrksoon says is “to dance like no one is watching and everything is seen, to watch like no one is dancing and everything is dance”.
