$17-million pedestrian and cyclist bridge above Upper Levels Highway opens in North Vancouver

A new pedestrian and cycling bridge over Highway 1 officially opened Thursday in the City of North Vancouver, creating a new north-south connection between neighbourhoods that have been physically separated for decades.
The Crosscut Bridge stretches from Loutet Park to the intersection of Casano Drive and Rufus Avenue. It is situated above the highway segment between the Mountain Highway interchange and the Lynn Valley Road interchange.
It also connects with several existing and future active transportation routes, including the Green Necklace, Salop Trail, Upper Levels Greenway and Eastside Connector. The City notes that the network will make it easier for residents to travel between the core of the city and Lynn Valley without relying on a vehicle.

“The opening of Crosscut Bridge marks the beginning of a new chapter for the City of North Vancouver,” said City of North Vancouver Mayor Linda Buchanan in a statement.
“It connects neighbourhoods that were previously separated, allowing families and individuals of all abilities and ages to travel safely and confidently over Highway 1. Children and youth can enjoy greater independence, and walking, cycling, and rolling have become not only viable options but also inviting choices for residents in the Cedar Village and Loutet neighbourhoods and throughout the City.”
Bowinn Ma, the BC NDP MLA for North Vancouver-Lonsdale, added, “This is exactly the kind of transportation infrastructure we want to see more of in British Columbia — infrastructure that gives people choices and makes it easier to get where they need to go safely.”
The project carried a total cost of $17 million, including $4 million from the provincial government and $2.5 million from TransLink.

The City is also studying the feasibility of potentially building a wide structural deck over a segment of Highway 1 around Lonsdale Avenue, which would serve to not only provide a new north-south active transportation connection between the Upper Lonsdale and Lower Lonsdale neighbourhoods, but also significant public park space.
Such a concept is envisioned adjacent to the newly opened Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre.
