Fraser Health declared a COVID-19 outbreak at Newtown Elementary School in Surrey Friday evening.

The health authority issued a news release just before 8 pm saying 16 cases have been tied to the school so far.

“As a precautionary measure to respond to this outbreak, Fraser Health has advised the Surrey School District to close Newton Elementary School for a two-week period to break any chains of COVID-19 transmission that may be present at the school,” Fraser Health said.

It added everyone in the community who’s experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 to get tested right away to prevent further transmission.
