Coronavirus case identified at West Vancouver elementary school

Vancouver Coastal Health has added Hollyburn Elementary to its list of schools with coronavirus exposures.

Hollyburn appeared on the health authority’s coronavirus exposure page on Wednesday, with a note saying the person infected with coronavirus was at school on Friday, October 2.

A school appearing on the exposures page means that someone who tested positive for coronavirus was at school while contagious.

Only students and staff who are directly contacted by contact tracers need to stay home and self-isolate — those who don’t hear from Vancouver Coastal Health are allowed to come to school as normal.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said at a news conference Monday that schools aren’t “amplifying” coronavirus transmission. She added many of the school cases so far were acquired outside of the school setting.

“Like earlier in our pandemic, children and students under the age of 19 still make up less than 10% of our total cases in the province,” she said.
