Armel Castellan, Meteorologist with Environment Canada, says that it’s the coldest October 9 in nearly 90 years.

“It’s safe to say that it’s the coldest October 9 since 1930 and one the top 10 coldest in history,” Castellan tells Daily Hive in an interview.

He notes that the last coldest day was in 1930, with posted a low of 1.7Ā°C. The coldest October 9 in history dates back to 1916 with a low of 0Ā°C.

“October 7 to 14 is a cold week for most of Western Canada,” he explains. “Typically at this time of year, we’re dealing with highs of 14Ā°C to 15Ā°C and lows of 6Ā°C or 7Ā°C.”

As far as what the rest of October holds, Castellan says it’s hard to say for sure, but he expects temperatures to return to normal by the end of the week.

“We don’t have a very high certainty forecast,” he notes. “But you’ll likely see a return to normal by Thursday or Friday, with highs of 15Ā°C in the sun.”

“Hopefully by then, this 1Ā°C business will be old news.”
