Clearly to donate tens of thousands of face shields to Vancouver hospitals
With local hospitals facing the extremely dire situation of depleting their supplies of personal protective equipment for their workers, there have been growing calls for the general public and business community to find ways to help contribute.
One of the largest infusions from the business community will be from Vancouver-based Clearly, which provided an emergency donation of 1,052 safety glasses — a makeshift temporary alternative to real face shields — to the Vancouver Coastal Health network of hospitals on Thursday.

But the eyewear retailer plans to do far more, as it has requested its global eyeglass and sunglass manufacturers to switch to face shield and safety glass production.

Within the very near future, the company is aiming to donate tens of thousands of much-needed face shields as a result of these repurposed manufacturing efforts.
“It’s our purpose to eradicate poor vision in the world but it’s also our mission and our duty as leader to protect our community in times like these,” Clearly CEO Arnaud Bussieres told Daily Hive in a prepared statement.
“We’re repurposing our supply chain and leveraging our frame suppliers to produce face shields and safety glasses that we’ll be donating to the heroes who are fighting the virus every day.”
When Clearly was founded in 2000, they were originally in the business of online contact lens orders. Towards the end of the decade, they made a major shift towards expanding their business to include prescription glasses and sunglasses, and their reach became global.
