Chris Cuthbert apologizes for screwing up Montreal-Carolina OT call

Sportsnet play-by-play announcer Chris Cuthbert made a small blunder on Monday night.

Unfortunately, it came in a big moment during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Carolina Hurricanes scored 14 minutes into overtime on Monday night to take a 2-1 series lead over the Montreal Canadiens in the Eastern Conference Final. But instead of crediting the goal to Hurricanes star forward Andrei Svechnikov, Cuthbert shouted out the name of his lesser-known brother, Evgeny.

Andrei’s big brother has been out of the league since the 2022-23 season after previous stops with the Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks, and Winnipeg Jets.

Cuthbert realized the mistake after the game. Early Tuesday morning, the 68-year-old broadcaster posted a self-deprecating apology to Andrei on X.

“Apologies Andrei! Hopefully I had the right Aho screening in front,” Cuthbert wrote.

There are two players named Sebastian Aho in professional hockey: a Finnish centre who plays for Carolina and a Swedish defenceman who now plays in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ organization.

Mistakes happen, especially in the heat of the moment. Credit to Cuthbert for owning up to it quickly and making light of it afterwards.
