Police are investigating a “sudden” death in the Vancouver Island community of Tofino.

In a release on Tuesday, police said the investigation began on December 13th, when Tofino RCMP assisted BC Ambulance after receiving a report a child had suffered injuries on the Tyhistanis Reserve and was in need of medical assistance.

“Tragically, on December 16th, the child succumbed to their injuries,” police said.

“This is a tragic situation affecting many people in the community, including family, friends, first responders and medical personnel,” said BC RCMP Supt. Sanjaya Wijayakoon. “This investigation is in its preliminary stages and is expected to be a long, thorough and involved process involving many agencies, including BC Coroners service.”

Police said other children from the residence have been temporarily placed in other residences while this investigation is taking place.

The BC Coroners Service is also conducting a concurrent fact-finding investigation into this unexpected death. Due to the privacy of the deceased, under the Coroners Act, the deceased’s name will not be released.

The RCMP and the BC Coroners Service are not releasing any further information at this time.
