Everyone knows the internet was created for two things: getting Saved by the Bell DVDs shipped directly to your door, and watching cute cats do stuff. This summer, Vancouverites can watch a carefully curated selection of the best cat videos the internet has to offer at the Just for Cats film festival.
Taking place at the Vancity Theatre June 28, Just for Cats will feature five screenings of an “exclusive reel” of cats videos curated by Will Braden of the Walker Art Centre in Minneapolis, Minnesota. There will also be kitten viewing and adoption counseling, animal-themed merch and displays on how to make a difference for homeless cats in your community.
Ticket sales for the festival will go to support cat welfare programs across British Columbia. Last year Just for Cats saw over 12,000 people attend, with $60,000 being raised for welfare initiatives.
“Cats are more popular companions than dogs in Canada, with 36 per cent of all households identifying themselves as cat guardians,” says Craig Naherniak, general manager of humane education for the BC SPCA. “On the flip side of that, there is still an overwhelming cat overpopulation crisis in B.C. The festival is a great opportunity to celebrate our love of cats and to make a difference for those who are homeless and suffering.”
Two special family screenings with take place at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., with $5 tickets for youth 18 and under. Additional screenings will take place at 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. with a VIP screening at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are $11 for adults, $9 for students and seniors, and $25 for the VIP screening. Viewers must be members of the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF).
