Capilano University proposing to build 302 beds of student housing on campus

Capilano University is hatching plans to provide its campus in North Vancouver with a new student residence building.

On behalf of the university, an application has been submitted to the District of North Vancouver to build a six-storey student housing building. The site is located near the southwest corner of the intersection of Monashee Drive and Tantalus Road — on the easternmost parcel of an existing ground-level parking lot.

There will be 180 rooms, creating a total of 302 student beds, including single- and double-occupancy dormitory style rooms. Shared washrooms and living facilities will be placed on each of the five upper floors dedicated for dormitory space.

A smaller number of one- and two-bedroom units with private kitchens and bathrooms will also be incorporated.

All rental rates at these dormitories will be set at below-market rental rates, and secured in perpetuity.

On the ground floor, there are plans to create a common area with a shared kitchen, shared multi-purpose space, and a dining hall with a capacity to accommodate up to 500 students.

The dining hall is sized for the needs of two possible future student housing expansions on the western parcels of the same parking lot site, with potentially two additional phases for two more buildings.

This project is still in the early stages of the municipal government’s review process. If approved, it would be the university’s first on-campus student housing option.

As well, it could complement Darwin Properties’ plan to redevelop 1310 Monashee Drive — immediately east of the parking lot site — into a mixed-use residential and commercial complex with 346 market rental homes dedicated to students, faculty, and staff of the university. Other uses entail 5,564 sq. ft. of food services space and 3,778 sq. ft. of artist space, with all uses supported by 168 vehicle parking stalls and 692 bike parking spaces located underground.

Capilano University’s only student residence facility is currently an off-campus location at 2420 Dollarton Highway, where it has leased 250 beds in a complex that was formerly an international school.

Approximately 10,500 students are enrolled at Capilano University’s programs.
