Should the Canucks trade for Evander Kane?

It sure sounds like Evander Kane wants out of Winnipeg…

The Jets’ Evander Kane was on the Team 1040 with Matt Sekeres and Blake Price earlier today. Sekeres addressed a rumour that’s been floating out there a while – that Kane is not completely happy playing for his current team.

From Kane’s responses, it sure seems like he wants to leave. But you don’t have to believe me, read his answers and judge for yourself.

Evander Kane asked if he wants to play for the Jets

Sekeres: “There’s so much speculation. I gotta ask you straight up. Evander, do you want to play for the Winnipeg Jets?”

“Well, I think I’m a Winnipeg Jet right now, and, uh, you know, there’s been speculation and rumours for the three years since I got there, so, you know, we’ll see what happens, and we’ll carry on as I’m a Winnipeg Jet.”

Sekeres: There’s not a ‘yes’ in there and some Jets fans might say, ‘Why doesn’t he want to play for us, or why isn’t he absolutely fully on board for playing for us?’ You’re shaking your finger at me…”

“No, I think um, you know, I’m training hard to get ready for this season, and um, you know, last summer I didn’t have a full year of training due to some surgery I had, so I found it really important for me to start training early and uh get myself in the best shape possible for this upcoming season, so that’s my goal.”

Sekeres went on to ask about the current Jets roster and the moves the team has made this summer, and Kane responded unexcitedly.

If you want to listen to the interview, you can hear it here. (Thanks to @taj1944 on Twitter for bringing this to our attention).

It’s pretty hard to miss the message between the lines in his responses. Kane wants out and he’s not great at hiding it.

Kane has four years remaining on his contract with the Jets at an annual cap hit of $5.25 million.

So here’s the next question: should Jim Benning make a trade to bring the Vancouver native home?
