For years, the Vancouver Canucks consistently ranked as one of the 10 most valuable franchises in the NHL.
That’s no longer the case.
When Sportico released its annual NHL franchise value rankings on Wednesday, the Canucks sat in the bottom half of the league.
This is the first time the Canucks have sat below league average since Forbes began releasing annual NHL franchise value rankings in 2010.
According to Sportico, the Canucks are currently the 18th most valuable franchise in the NHL with a value of $1.87 billion. Three Sun Belt teams are directly ahead of the Canucks, as the Carolina Hurricanes (15th, $1.92 billion), Tampa Bay Lightning (16th, $1.9 billion) and two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers (17th, $1.89 billion) are all considered more valuable franchises.
The Panthers skyrocketed up the list since last year, with a year-over-year value increase of 51 per cent. They were followed closely by the Hurricanes at 49 per cent.
Vancouver had the third-lowest increase since last year’s 13th-place ranking, growing by just eight per cent. Only the San Jose Sharks (5%) and the Lightning (6%) grew less than the Canucks.
Here’s where the Canucks rank since 2010 in terms of franchise value rankings. Numbers from 2010-20 are from Forbes, while the numbers and rankings since 2021 come courtesy of Sportico.
- 2025: $1.87B (18th)
- 2024: $1.73B (13th)
- 2023: $1.2B (13th)
- 2022: $1B (11th)
- 2021: $975M (11th)
- 2020: $725M (10th)
- 2019: $740M (10th)
- 2018: $735M (9th)
- 2017: $730M (8th)
- 2016: $700M (7th)
- 2015: $745M (6th)
- 2014: $800M (5th)
- 2013: $700M (4th)
- 2012: $342M (7th)
- 2011: $300M (7th)
- 2010: $262M (8th)
The Canucks are still the fourth-most valuable franchise in Canada. They sit narrowly ahead of the Calgary Flames ($1.82 billion, 19th), while the Ottawa Senators ($1.34 billion, 30th) and Winnipeg Jets ($1.33 billion, 31st) are only ahead of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
However, the Canucks trail the top three Canadian teams (Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers) by a significant margin.

The good news is the NHL continues to grow, even if the Canucks are lagging behind most other franchises.
Sportico reported that over the past three years, NHL growth has outpaced that of the NBA, NFL and MLB.
NHL franchise values have increased by 108 per cent since 2022. During the same time span, the NBA has grown 78 per cent, NFL franchises are up 72 per cent, while the MLB team values have increased by just 22 per cent.
Since 2022, the Canucks have grown by 87 per cent.
