Marcus Pettersson is here to stay.

The new Vancouver Canucks defenceman has signed a six-year, $33 million contract extension, paying him $5.5 million per season. The contract includes a no-movement clause for the first three years, per CHEK’s Rick Dhaliwal. The final three years of the deal include a 15-team no-trade list, Dhaliwal adds.

The 28-year-old blueliner was one of four players acquired on Friday, when the Canucks completed a pair of trades. The Canucks acquired a first-round pick in the J.T. Miller trade with the New York Rangers, which they flipped to the Pittsburgh Penguins as part of a deal that brought Pettersson to Vancouver.

The 6-foot-5 defenceman is a player that Canucks management knew well from their time in Pittsburgh, which likely helped make a quick decision to lock him up on a long-term contract.

ā€œIn just a couple of games, Marcus has already shown us the type of leadership, poise and character that we want in a top-four defenceman,ā€ said Canucks GM Patrik Allvin. ā€œHe has a calming influence on the ice, uses his long reach and hockey smarts to break up plays and has a good first pass to help us create more offensively. We are extremely happy to get this deal done and look forward to working with him in both the short term and long term.ā€

Pettersson is in the last year of a contract paying him $4.03 million and was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

He brings stability to Vancouver’s back end as a proven top-four defenceman. The Canucks have leaned on him heavily already, as Pettersson played 25:57 Sunday against the Detroit Red Wings and 23:03 in Tuesday’s impressive win over the Colorado Avalanche.
