Will Vancouver Canucks get revenge on Jason Dickinson for dirty hit?

It was the hit that arguably ended the Vancouver Canucks’ playoff quest last season.

Not only that, but it was completely unnecessary, and it concussed one of the top players on the team for the rest of the season.

Back on March 15, the Canucks maintained their slim hold on a playoff spot during a 6-2 victory over the lowly Chicago Blackhawks. With five minutes remaining in the lopsided contest, former Canucks centre Jason Dickinson belted Filip Chytil right into the numbers, causing his face to slam into the glass.

Chytil was diagnosed with a concussion after the game, the fifth of his young NHL career.

Even though Chytil had just two goals and six points during his 15-game stint with the Canucks last season, he was often the most dangerous forward that Vancouver had on the ice. He led the team in both shots per 60 and expected goals per 60 at even strength, and by a relatively wide margin.

The Canucks lost three of their next four games after this hit. In the third defeat during that stretch, they also lost Elias Pettersson to a season-ending injury.

Those two injuries thrust Pius Suter into the spotlight as the team’s No. 1 centre. While he performed admirably, the injuries to Pettersson and Chytil crushed the Canucks’ chances of making the playoffs.

With the Blackhawks now set to host the Canucks on Friday, the question is, will the Canucks exact revenge?

“He’s going to have to answer the bell next year because I know we don’t play them again,” Kiefer Sherwood said back on March 15.

“That was a dirty hit. Unnecessary. And then he doesn’t have the whatever to step on the ice afterwards.”

“It is what it is. We’ll get him next year.”

Sherwood also alluded to the fact that Derek Forbort asked him to fight, but Dickinson refused. Forbort won’t play in this game as he’s currently on injured reserve.

Heading into the contest, it sounds like Dickinson is prepared for some fireworks against the Canucks.

Even though Dickinson ended Chytil’s 2024-25 season, thankfully, the Czech centre managed to make a full recovery. He’s currently tied with Sherwood for the team lead in goals, with three tallies in four games so far this season.
