Super-soft OT penalty to Vancouver Canucks prospect Willander costs Sweden

You have to feel terrible for Vancouver Canucks prospect Tom Willander.

The 19-year-old Swedish defenceman was called for a penalty late in overtime during today’s semi-final game at the World Juniors, which saw Finland score the winner on the ensuing power play. Finland will play for gold Sunday in Ottawa, while Sweden will have to settle for a shot at bronze.

At best, the penalty call was soft. At worst, it was a phantom call, or perhaps a makeup call after Sweden had a power play earlier in overtime.

Willander shoved the puck-carrier, Finnish forward Topias Hynninen, with a glove to his shoulder. It shouldn’t be a penalty at anytime, never mind overtime of a semi-final.

The penalty spoiled what was an exceptional tournament for Willander, who the Canucks drafted 11th overall in 2023. The right-shot blueliner scored five points (2-3-5) in six games and was praised by prospects experts for his strong defensive play.

Willander is in his second season at Boston University, and is expected by some to turn pro at season’s end.
