Leading the OHL in scoring is no small feat. This Vancouver Canucks prospect is doing so as a defenceman, making it even more impressive.

Hunter Brzustewicz is off to a fast start this year with 20 points through the first 10 games of his OHL campaign. He has five goals and 15 assists and is a large reason why the Kitchener Rangers sit in first place in the Midwest Division.

After being held pointless in his first game of the season, Brzstuwicz has absolutely exploded for 20 points in nine games. During that time frame, he had four consecutive three-point games.

Last season, Brzustewicz had six goals in 68 games. This year, he has five goals through the first 10 games as he has been showing off what looks like a much-improved shot.

Through 10 games, Brzustewicz is averaging two points per game. There is only one OHL defenceman who has ever averaged more points per game. That would be Bryan Fogarty, who scored 2.58 points per game during the 1988-89 season.

The best comparable to the season that Brzustewicz is having this year is likely Brandt Clarke’s 2022-23 season last year. After being drafted with the eighth overall selection in the 2021 NHL Draft, Clarke played his nine NHL games before heading back to the OHL. While in the OHL, Clarke scored 61 points in 31 games, good for 1.97 points per game.

Clarke is considered to be one of the best right-handed defence prospects in all of hockey. If Brzustewicz can keep up this pace, he’ll have to also be considered a top prospect. Clarke also achieved that amazing season two years after being drafted, while this is Brzustewicz’s first since he was selected by the Canucks.

Considering that first-round draft pick, Tom Willander, has also had a hot start at Boston University, the Canucks must be pleased with the future outlook of their right-side defence.
