Details still murky about Brock Boeser's condition for Canucks

Editor’s note: Though Sportsnet’s 650’s Brendan Batchelor had originally reported from Rick Tocchet that Boeser is day-to-day, it appeared that there was a bit of a mix-up over Tocchet’s actual intended words, stating that any update would be a day-to-day thing, rather than Boeser’s actual condition. This article has been adjusted accordingly.

The Vancouver Canucks appeared to offer up a bit of an update today on injured forward Brock Boeser, but it turns out we’re still waiting for more info.

The exact nature of the injury was not confirmed when reporters asked head coach Rick Tocchet about Boeser’s timeline to return.

It’s likely Boeser is dealing with a head injury and possible concussion, given the nature of the hit that has caused him to be sidelined since November 7.

Boeser was hurt last week in a high hit from Tanner Jeannot, which resulted in a three-game suspension for the Los Angeles forward.

“The head is the main point of contact. While there is some contact with Boeser’s body, Jeannot’s shoulder makes direct and forceful contact with Boeser’s head, and it is the head that absorbs the majority of the force of this check,” the NHL Department of Player Safety said in its suspension explanation video.

“Second, the head contact on this play is avoidable. It is Jeannot who is in control of this hit, and he chooses an angle of approach that cuts across the front of Boeser, missing his core and making his head the main point of contact.”

Jonathan Lekkerimäki, a 20-year-old 2023 draft pick, was called up over the weekend in Boeser’s absence.

Vancouver is set to play four games in six days starting tomorrow when they play host to the Calgary Flames at Rogers Arena.

Tocchet has said over the weekend that he’d spoken to Boeser earlier in the week following the Canucks star’s injury.

“I talked to [Brock] a little bit briefly,” Tocchet said on Saturday. “He doesn’t feel great, but I wouldn’t say it’s horrible. I think it’s indefinite right now. These things can change in a week, or [even] 24 hours, I don’t know. We’ll monitor him.”

The 27-year-old was having a strong start to the season with six goals and 11 points through 12 games.
