Canucks lose Teddy Blueger to another team in free agency

Teddy Blueger has a new home.

The 31-year-old centre, who played the past three seasons with the Vancouver Canucks, has signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs in free agency.

Blueger signed a two-year contract worth $2.5 million, according to several reports. That’s a raise on the $1.8-million salary he had with the Canucks.

The Canucks missed the Latvian native for much of last season, due to injury. Blueger appeared in 35 games for the Canucks, scoring 17 points (9-8-17).

Blueger sounded open to returning to the Canucks late last season, but new GM Ryan Johnson didn’t seem interested in bringing him back. Johnson has indicated that he wants to turn over much of Vancouver’s roster, as the Canucks try to reset their broken culture.

“I don’t want to just sit with the same group. I think by even small changes, you add a different energy and excitement,” Johnson told reporters recently. “Do I want to keep rolling it back with the same? Preferably not.”

The Canucks have made multiple free-agent signings on Wednesday, most notably defenceman Luke Schenn and winger Paul Cotter.
