The Vancouver Canucks were able to bring back Brock Boeser, but they’ve lost their other coveted unrestricted free agent.
Pius Suter is leaving the Canucks for the St. Louis Blues in free agency, according to multiple reports. He signed a two-year contract worth $4.125 million per season, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

It’s an interesting deal, given it has just two years of term. Suter was expected to cash in more following a career-best season that saw him score 25 goals and 46 points in 2024-25.
The Canucks were reportedly looking at shedding cap space in other ways to bring the 29-year-old Swiss centre back, but weren’t willing to give Suter $4 million per season, says CHEK’s Rick Dhaliwal.
Canucks never could get to 4M with Suter, believe Suter was willing to give Canucks a discount, he really liked Vancouver.

Suter’s departure leaves a hole at centre for the Canucks, who were already thin at that position. He’ll be sorely missed on the penalty kill, where he was used more than any other Canucks player last season.
The Canucks are seemingly banking on Elias Pettersson having a bounce-back season and Filip Chytil staying healthy. Their depth chart at centre after those two players includes Teddy Blueger, Nils Åman, Aatu Räty, Max Sasson, and Ty Mueller.
There’s time to improve via trade before next season, but it won’t be easy.
