The Vancouver Canucks won’t have a new defenceman on the top pairing, but it will sure look like it.
Getting into the spirit of Movember, Filip Hronek looked like a new man when he showed up to Tuesday’s morning skate.
Instead of the full beard that has become his signature look, Hronek took the ice with a massive moustache.

To quote Keke Palmer, “I don’t know who this man is. I mean, he could be walking down the street, I wouldn’t know a thing. Sorry to this man.”
Sometimes mistakenly called a handlebar moustache, Hronek’s new look is more accurately called a horseshoe moustache, one that is more commonly found on bikers than hockey players.
It’s been a long time since anyone saw Hronek’s chin, to the point that he barely looks like the same man.
Even in his rookie year, Hronek had a bit of scruff on his face.

By his sophomore season with the Detroit Red Wings, Hronek already had the full beard that would define his look for years to come.

“We don’t ask Fil to be dynamic and carry the team on his back”
While his face took on a new appearance Tuesday morning, Hronek has been looking like a new man on the ice for a couple of weeks.
After a rough start to the season, Hronek is currently on a five-game point streak with a goal and five assists.
Hronek is also eating up massive minutes for the Canucks. He’s averaging nearly 26 minutes per game, ranked ninth among NHL defencemen in average ice time. That’s a tough task on a team with a talent deficit that’s destined to spend a lot of time in the defensive zone.
But it also provides a boost to the rest of the young defence corps.
“When it comes from your leadership, and they’re providing that consistency — that’s a word we keep using around here,” said head coach Manny Malhotra. “It’s just the consistency of playing good hockey, and making your breakout passes, and killing plays down low, and just being consistent in that regard.
“We don’t ask Fil to be dynamic and carry the team on his back, but his continued consistent play is definitely a bonus for us. That’s the messaging for the group: just be consistent.”
Ironically, Hronek’s facial hair, a model of consistency up until this point, is suddenly the least consistent part of him.
