Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney hits the ice with Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers had a very special guest hit the ice with them for this morning’s skate at Rogers Place.

Canadian Prime Minister and self-proclaimed Oilers superfan Mark Carney laced up the skates and hit the ice as Edmonton got a morning skate ahead of tonight’s matchup against the Winnipeg Jets.

Carney is originally from Fort Smith, North West Territories, but was raised in the Alberta capital. He was seen skating with the Oilers, taking shots on the net, and even setting up players in the slot with a few sweet passes.

He sported a custom Oilers home jersey with “Carney” on the back and the #24 to represent him being the 24th Canadian prime minister.

This is far from the first time that Carney has hit the ice in his life. The 60-year-old has played hockey his entire life as a goaltender and appeared in one game with Harvard in 1984-85, stopping all five shots he faced in a 10-2 victory over Colgate.

To add to his Oilers connection, Carney was also roommates with former Edmonton GM Peter Chiarelli during his days at Harvard.

It was certainly an unexpected addition to the Oilers’ morning skate roster, but not the only one. Evander Kane was also on the ice alongside the prime minister, marking the first time all season that the power forward has skated with his teammates.

The prime minister has his roots in Alberta so it makes sense that he is both an Oilers fan and is currently in the city. Apart from skating with his favourite NHL team, Carney is also in town to meet with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and make a housing announcement in the city sometime this afternoon.

It remains to be seen if Carney will be in attendance for tonight’s big game against the league-leading Jets.
