Canadian Olympic medallist's dad shares emotional reaction: 'Made us proud'

Canada captured its second Olympic medal of the 2026 Games, and it was an emotional one.

Olympic freestyle skier Megan Oldham was able to earn a bronze medal in ski slopestyle on Monday morning. It was the 24-year-old’s first Olympic medal, recording a score of  76.46, narrowly edging out Great Britain’s Kristy Muir by less than a point to get on the podium.

The only person more excited about the medal win may have been her dad, Howard, who was on hand in Italy to witness the accomplishment in person.

CBC was able to track down and interview Oldham’s father to talk about the moment.

The third-place finish represents a redemption for Oldham, who missed out on the podium by placing fourth in big air at the Beijing 2022 Olympics. This moment will help ease the pain of missing out last time around.

“Last Olympics, she got fourth and missed [the podium] by one point,” her father said. “It was heartbreaking because she wanted it so bad. Just for her to come through today… It was everything that we worked for, and trained for, and strived for.”

Oldham was coming off a serious crash just mere weeks before the Olympics that landed her in the hospital. The Parry Sound, Ont., native crashed again during this event as well, but was able to stay in the competition and battle back.

Howard detailed the ups and downs his daughter had to traverse to get to this moment.

“Six weeks ago, Megan had a really bad crash, not dissimilar to today, where she crashed,” he said. “She had a concussion and whiplash, and she came back, and she got back on the horse, and she rode it again.

“She made us proud.”

Oldham will have a chance to add to her medal count in the coming weeks. She will compete in the women’s freeski big air event, looking to avenge that fourth-place finish from four years ago.

Qualification for the women’s big air event is set for Saturday, Feb. 14, while the final will go on Monday, Feb. 16.
