Canada just avoided a snap federal election this fall

There will be no federal snap election this fall after the Trudeau government survived a confidence vote in the House of Commons on Wednesday.

The confidence vote was on a motion put forward by the Conservative Party, which sought to create a special committee to further investigate the federal government’s ethics and spending during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The final vote result was 146 for, and 180 against, with the NDP and green Party siding with the Liberals against, and the Conservatives and Bloc Quebecois voting in favour.

“Today, parliamentarians chose Canadians over politics,” said House Leader Pablo Rodríguez. “I think it’s a good decision. It allows the government to continue its important work during the pandemic.”

Ahead of the vote, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said his party was “voting for Canadians. We are voting against an election.”
