Canada has a new Olympian after Brayden Point ruled out due to injury

Brayden Point’s Olympic dreams are over.

After being one of the six players named to the preliminary roster back in, the Calgary, Alta., native has officially been ruled out for the Olympics.

Point originally suffered a knee injury on Jan. 12 against the Philadelphia Flyers, and hasn’t played since.

On Thursday, multiple reports surfaced that he wouldn’t be joining his fellow Canadians in Italy for the Olympics. It was also revealed that another 4 Nations snub would sub in his place.

Seth Jarvis will replace Point at the Olympics. He was one of three skaters who played at the 4 Nations but wasn’t named to the Olympic squad.

Now that Sam Bennett and Seth Jarvis have both been named as injury replacements, Travis Konecny remains the lone forward from the 4 Nations who won’t represent Canada at the Olympics.

Although Jarvis has missed some time due to injury this season, he does have 25 goals and 43 points in 48 games.

Naming injury replacements isn’t an easy job, but Canada’s general manager Doug Armstrong did leave some pretty compelling names on the table.

Connor Bedard of the Chicago Blackhawks certainly stands out. The 20-year-old has more points in fewer games. And, as his coach has said, his defensive game has come a long way as well.

There’s also Mark Scheifele, who has 68 points in 56 games. That’s fourth among Canadian forwards, behind only Macklin Celebrini, Nathan MacKinnon, and Connor McDavid.

During his three games played at the 4 Nations, Jarvis had one assist while playing in a bottom-six role.
